This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。剧情讲述金兵铁蹄践踏中原，智性在战火中失去双亲，成了孤儿，被云游各地的高僧行癫搭救，一同来到报国寺。智性进入寺院，削发为僧，取法号苦行僧，在觉远大师抚养下，练就一身高超的武功。但寺中戒律僧视他为孽障，不让他进入罗汉堂。智性无奈只好告辞众僧，只身隐居山林，与猴群为伍，和苍鹰作伴。他带枷在悬崖峭壁上采药，几年苦练，又练成一套超群的绝技。国难当前，金兵大举入侵中原，荼毒生灵。在金兵辱杀寺内众僧的时候，他挺身而出，赶走了金兵，却被戒律僧以触犯戒律意欲严惩。智性与戒律僧狭路相逢，激战于崖顶。交手数回合后，智性不慎失足，跌下深渊。戒律僧以为智性必死无疑。孰料智性大难不死，被李家庄李大伯搭救，并得到乔扮男装屡次救过他的美貌女子赵襄的精心照料。金兵奸细施乍打探到智性住在李大伯家养伤，便引金兵前来血洗李家庄。赵襄与智性将计就计，诱敌深入，率义军在庄外打下埋伏，击退金兵...。
