Comedy about the proverbial genie who comes out of a bottle (a table lamp in this instance) to serve his new master. The only problem is that instead of helping his master, the genie (Burl Ives) tends to get his master (Tony Randall) into more predicaments than he gets him out of.。该片讲述了1949年4月下旬，国民党军长江防线被突破，解放军乘胜南下，准备一鼓作气拿下中国的金融中心上海。但是，这座当时被称为“远东第一城”的大都市，却给当时的共产党人出了一道难题：如何才能将城市破坏和人民伤亡降到最低？故事的叙述由此展开。。
